Eglomised glass ‘boule de pardon’ or ‘boule de mariée’ with wrought-iron stand Late 19th century Diameter: 40 cm Note: The tradition of ‘boules de pardon’ originates in Brittany, where young men buy glass balls during the ‘Messe du Pardon’ (local masses held to honour a saint associated with the local church). The purchase is made either to keep a memento of the day and give it to a relative who was unable to attend, or to present it to the young man’s beloved as a token of his intention to marry her. In the latter case, the larger the ball, the greater the debt. The baubles are displayed and kept within families for generations.
