Description
Navigation fox from the slave ship *L’ARMIDE*, made of mahogany with its ‘chickens’ (rods connected by ropes) The navigation fox is an instrument used to record the ship’s course and speed France – c. 1850–1860 55.5 x 32 cm Note: The Armide was a frigate in service from around 1821 to 1888. Armed with 28 guns, the ship sailed to Brazil, then to Bourbon Island, before being converted into a hospital ship in 1828. On its return to the West Indies, it was converted into a transport ship in 1852 and used to transport prisoners between Brest and the penal colony at Cayenne. In 1864, the ship was decommissioned to serve as a training vessel under the name Entrepôt, before finally being scrapped in 1888.
