Description
MARIE fils (active c. 1740–1760) Four-section case in vellum and leather, with bronze rings, signed ‘Marie Fils Quai de l’Horloge, Paris’ and dated 1745 Superb quality of finish and condition, with filigree decoration L. 106 cm (stretched frame) Note: Marie the Elder was an optician in Paris and a supplier to the Paris Observatory in 1736. He established the ‘Au Griffon’ shop at 39 Quai de l’Horloge in the early 1700s. The business was then taken over by his son, who signed his work “Marie Fils” until his death in 1760. From that point onwards, the company was run by Marie’s widow and continued to supply the Paris Observatory. In 1788, MARIE telescopes were regarded as superior to their English counterparts. The business was taken over by Putois, who signed as “Successor to the Widow Marie” at the end of the 18th century. Subsequently, the business was taken over by the Rochette family from 1808 onwards. The ‘Au Griffon’ brand endured until the Patouelle family took over in the early 20th century and remained a mark of quality.
