François Joseph Frédéric ROUX (1805–1870) Watercolour depicting a schooner flying the French flag and another boat, signed in the lower right-hand corner and dated 1828 in Marseille Early 19th century Framed 84 x 66 cm (including frame) Note: François Joseph Roux was the second son of the Marseille painter Ange-Joseph Antoine Roux. He soon began working in the family studio to learn shipbuilding and painting. A keen traveller, he settled in Le Havre in 1830 and was awarded a gold medal for an act of bravery at sea. The Roux dynasty was a prominent family of painters from the late 18th century until 1882, specialising in depictions of boats.
