Description
Marc SIMON, interior designer, assisted by his son PIERRE SIMON Set of two ‘DEAUVILLE’ armchairs for the ‘Versailles’ economy class dining room Armchairs with black lacquered tubular legs and a metal frame, featuring wraparound shells forming solid armrests, filled with latex and upholstered in Havana-coloured imitation leather Produced by AIRBORNE (label missing) Circa 1960 78 x 59.5 x 57 cm This type of armchair can be seen in the catalogue for the 2011 ‘FRANCE’ exhibition at the Musée de la Marine (p. 89) and in Armelle Bouchet’s book ‘LE PAQUEBOT FRANCE’ (pages 125, 126, 127, 171 and 173), which states that ‘this model combines all the elements of modern comfort characteristic of 1960s seating’ Note: The ‘Versailles’ dining room on the France occupied a vast space across two levels (main deck and A deck) spanning the full width of the liner. Originally, there were 632 armchairs on A deck and 196 on the main deck. All were upholstered in olive-green or grey-beige fabric. Following criticism of the colour of the 632 seats on Deck A, Marc Simon introduced another colour option: black. Subsequently, the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique requested further colour variations over time.
