Paris, Gallimard, 1958. 12mo paperback, yellowed paper. Provenance: Estate of Paul OETTLY – French actor and theatre director. Paul Oettly’s wife, Marguerite Faure, was the daughter of the architect Jean Faure, and the aunt of Francine Faure. Following Francine Faure’s marriage to Albert Camus in 1940, Paul Oettly thus became the writer’s uncle-in-law. This is why the future Nobel Prize winner in Literature moved in with Mrs OETTLY when he suffered a relapse of haemoptysis in 1942. One of the many favours the actor did for Camus during his enforced stay at Le Panelier was to supply him with paper, a scarce commodity during the war and essential for the writer. The two men got on very well and often went fishing together. Oettly was involved in the production of all of Albert Camus’s plays.
