The legend of Kiyohime tells of the fury of the young woman Kiyohime betrayed by the monk Anchin. He abandons her after swearing eternal love to her. Mad with grief, she transforms herself into a serpent-shaped monster and pursues him to the Dojo-ji temple, where the monks try to hide him under a bronze bell. But Kiyohime senses his presence and wraps herself around the bell, heating the metal until her imprisoned lover burns to death.
