Description
CHINA
A scholar's screen in ironwood framing a plaque in white Dali marble with grey or black veins painted in the scholar's tradition on one side of an imperial interview: the emperor surrounded by dignitaries and officials on the terrace of a palace receives two kneeling figures. The reverse is decorated with a landscape painting bearing an inscription in cursive and seals "the clouds would like to resemble his clothes, the flowers his minoi; the gentle breeze brushing the railing celebrates the dewdrops".
Bears the signature of QIAOFENG. A first irregular seal is painted to the right of the inscription, a second below the signature bears a Zhao character, the signature is a pseudonym that can be translated as Hail Mountain or a tried and tested peak.
A hexagonal seal can be seen at the top of the frame on the front of the screen.
The two verses of the inscription are titled with a quatrain in the ancient style of the music bureau by LI BAI. These verses are said to have been composed in 743 by the great poet who was then assigned to the academy of the brush forest.
