This iconography echoes a popular expression used during the mame-maki ritual performed during the Setsubun festival. Weighted seeds are thrown through the window, shouting "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi" (Out with the demons, in with happiness!) to attract good fortune.
Provenance: Acquired in 1983 from the Louvre des Antiquaires.
