Description
o DU FOUILLOUX (Jacques). Hunting with Hounds. oo FRANCHIÈRE (Jean de). Falconry. Paris: For Abel l’Angelier, 1585. Two works in one small quarto volume, brown calfskin with raised bands and decorative design (contemporary binding). [VII] + 125 ff., & oo [IV including half-title] + 127 + [V] ff. Numerous woodcuts in the text, including one on each title page. Editions ‘revised, corrected & augmented with hunts not previously printed’ and ‘further revised, corrected & augmented in addition to the previous printings’. This edition is enriched with several additional texts on hunting, including *La Chasse du loup* by Jean de Clamorgan and various treatises on hunting and the care of dogs, and it is the first to bring together *La Vénerie* by DU FOUILLOUX and *La Fauconnerie* by FRANCHIERE; it is also the most richly illustrated and is the edition that would set the standard for subsequent editions. From the Falloux libraries with a handwritten bookplate on the title page, and Hemricourt? with a bookplate (gueule on an ermine band). Split edges; worn corners; in the first volume: a tear, with no loss of text, on page 2; restoration and a small loss on page 19; handwritten annotations on page 21; some foxing. A highly sought-after edition, owing to the value of the additions it contains, and because the quality of the engravings is superior to that of later editions. The initials J. D. S., ‘gentleman of Poitou’, which appear on the title page of this edition, stand for Jean de Sansicquet, a gentleman from Poitou. Jean de Sansicquet, Lord of Denans and Escoué, was a friend and relative of J. du Fouilloux”. (Thiébaud 300–303); Schwerdt I, p. 153; Souhart 151–152; Jeanson 191. Appraiser: Cabinet REVEL, Paris.
