Description
French School, 17th century Portrait of Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, Marshal of France Canvas, a transposed panel Inscriptions in the top left-hand corner: ‘Aetatis Suae Anno/XXXXX…’ Losses and restorations. 203 x 109 cm Maximilien de Béthune (1559–1641), 1st Duke of Sully, a Protestant and comrade-in-arms of Henry IV, held numerous prestigious offices and was the driving force behind major reforms. In particular, he served as Superintendent of Finances and Superintendent of Fortifications. Louis XIII appointed him Marshal of France in 1634.
