Maximilien de Béthune (1559–1641), 1st Duke of Sully, a Protestant and comrade-in-arms of Henry IV, held numerous prestigious offices and was the driving force behind major reforms. In particular, he served as Superintendent of Finances and Superintendent of Fortifications. Louis XIII appointed him Marshal of France in 1634.
