The daughter of Monsieur, the King’s brother, and Elisabeth Charlotte of Bavaria, known as the Princess Palatine, Elisabeth Charlotte d’Orléans was the niece of Louis XIV. In 1698, she married Leopold I, Duke of Lorraine and Bar. She served as regent of the duchies on behalf of her son until 1737, upon her husband’s death. One of her sons, François, Duke of Lorraine, married Marie-Thérèse of Habsburg, the future Empress of Austria.
