Philip IV of Spain (1605–1665) became King of Spain in 1621. Although Habsburg power was at its zenith in Europe during his reign, he struggled to stem Spain’s political decline despite numerous attempts at reform. Philip IV is remembered above all in history as one of the greatest art lovers and patrons. He supported writers such as Calderón de la Barca and Lope de Vega, as well as Velázquez, whom he brought to court in 1623. He commissioned numerous works from artists such as Rubens and Poussin and purchased entire collections of paintings, such as that of the former King of England, Charles I. On his death, his collection comprised more than eight hundred paintings.
