Description
Italian School, 19th century, in the style of Bernardino dei Conti Portrait of Charles II d’Amboise Panel. Inscriptions at the top: ‘HLIS CAROLUS DE AMBOSIA DNUS CHIAMONTIS’. Restored. 71 x 48 cm Born into a powerful family, Charles II d’Amboise (1473–1511), Lord of Chaumont, Charenton and Meillant, led the French conquests in Italy. A close associate of King Louis XII, lieutenant-general of the kingdom in the Milanese region and a great art lover, he was one of the first to introduce the Renaissance to France, notably through the painter Solario. It is accompanied by an old frame made of canvas painted with allegorical scenes, one of which depicts a model of Meillant Castle.
