NEW SPAIN, 17th–18th century
A rare travelling trunk known as a ‘Pataca’.
A small trunk designed for carrying valuables.
Made of leather, decorated with cut-out leather appliqués embroidered with cream-coloured agave thread. Decorated with foliage and floral interlacing; the front panel features double-headed eagle motifs; the back is undecorated.
Hinges and lock in openwork metal engraved with floral scrolls; side carrying handles.
The interior is woven and lined with canvas.
In good overall condition, with a few minor imperfections; the lining has been replaced.

Similar embroidered chests are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (2018.3) and the MAD in Paris (987.43 – Donated by Gaston Louis Vuitton, 1989).
