Portrait of Vincent I of Gonzaga.

Vincent I de Gonzague (1562–1612), 4th Duke of Mantua from 1587, was awarded the Golden Fleece by the Holy Roman Emperor. Appointed a Prince of the Holy Roman Empire in 1593, he became famous for his taste for extravagant luxury and a life of pleasure, but also for his exceptional art collection. He brought Rubens to his court in 1601 and was also a patron of Monteverdi. Our portrait dates from before 1589, as Vincent I of Gonzaga is not yet wearing the Golden Fleece; he is shown here aged around 25.
The attribution to Jean Bahuet, who worked at the Gonzaga court, was suggested by Madame Delphine Carrangeot.
We know of one portrait by this artist of Marguerite de Gonzaga d’Este, sister of Duke Vincent I, the whereabouts of which are currently unknown.
