Daughter of King Philip II of Spain and Elisabeth of France, Archduchess Isabella of Austria, Infanta of Spain, received Flanders as her dowry upon her marriage in 1598 to Archduke Albert of Austria. In 1621, sovereignty over these provinces reverted to her nephew Philip IV of Spain. She nevertheless continued to govern until her death, despite having taken the habit of a Poor Clare nun upon her husband’s death.
