Jérôme Phélypeaux de Pontchartrain (1674–1747) succeeded his father as Secretary of State for the King’s Household in 1699. As Secretary of State for the Navy, he was the driving force behind the conquest of Louisiana. He founded the Académie des Inscriptions et des Médailles in 1701.
