A bookcase known as the ‘Description de l’Égypte’, mid-19th century The hinged top rests on two side panels, each topped by two drawers, with a third central panel at waist height Embellished with the Mortemart coat of arms and decorated with vine tendrils H. 120 W. 273 D. 107 cm This monumental piece of furniture was designed to house the *Description de l’Égypte*, a major work resulting from the French expedition led by Bonaparte to Egypt (1798–1801), the publication of which spanned the years 1809 to 1826. During this campaign, numerous scholars, engineers and artists accompanied the French army. The result of their work is a monumental encyclopaedic work, bringing together their observations and research conducted on the banks of the Nile. It comprises ten volumes of text and thirteen volumes of large-format plates. In order to preserve and display this exceptional collection, the engineer Edme-François Jomard and the Parisian cabinetmaker Charles Morel were commissioned to design a specialised piece of furniture, known as the ‘Retour d’Égypte’. Other cabinetmakers subsequently produced similar designs, such as Georges Jacob, who also designed a piece of furniture intended to house this monumental work. Our piece follows in this tradition, bearing witness to the enthusiasm generated by the *Description de l’Égypte*.
