The film Tenkai Hen (2004) is the final animated production in Masami Kurumada’s classic series — a cinematic epilogue filmed after the Hades OAVs, intended as a prologue to a new TV series that never saw the light of day. In it, Ikki faces the Angels of the goddess Artemis alongside the other Bronze Saints. The visual quality of this film surpasses that of the TV series: it boasts a cinema-scale budget, revised character designs and smoother animation. Ikki of the Phoenix is the most independent and, in raw power, the most formidable Bronze Saint in the series — his action figure, from the only film to have brought all the protagonists together for a final battle, is a particularly rare find.
Ikki is the most powerful, the most solitary, and the most morally complex Bronze Saint: a former antagonist turned ally, he rarely chooses to obey orders. His Phoenix Genma Ken technique — which destroys the opponent’s mind through illusions — is one of the most visually abstract in the series, presenting the animators with the challenge of depicting psychological destruction.
