Hyôga is the character whose personal arc is most clearly built around a family tragedy — his mother drowned in the wreck of a ship beneath the Siberian ice, a subject to which he returns time and again. A disciple of Camus of Aquarius, he is ultimately forced to kill his master in order to progress — one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the series. His ice techniques (Diamond Dust, Aurora Execution) are among the most visually spectacular in the series, and the dôgas depicting them present the animators with particular visual challenges: making the cold, the condensation and the forming crystals visible.
