Description
Shurato – Chronicles of the Celestial War (天空戦記シュラト) Shurato Hidaka and Lakshu Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime Shurato – Chronicles of the Celestial War, based on Hiroshi Kawamoto’s work (川本 祐弘). Executed in ink and gouache. Produced by Tatsunoko Production 1989–1990, Japan H24 L27 cm Shurato is Tatsunoko’s answer to Toei and Sunrise: whilst *Saint Seiya* draws on Greek mythology and *The Samurai of Eternity* on Japanese tradition, *Shurato* builds its universe around Hindu mythology. Shurato Hidaka, a young martial arts champion transported to the celestial world of Tenkūkai, discovers there that he is the reincarnation of one of the eight Celestial Warriors of the goddess Vishnu. Lakshu — inspired by the goddess Lakshmi — is the first inhabitant of Tenkūkai he meets, and his bond with her forms the emotional backbone of the series. This cell depicts the two characters together — the hero and his companion — in a composition that directly conveys something about their relationship. As the series was rarely broadcast outside Japan, Shurato remains little known in the Western market, making its production materials particularly rare.
