Description
Dragon Quest: Abel Yuusha (ドラゴンクエスト~勇者アベル伝説~ - Dragon Quest ~Yuusha Abel Densetsu~) Densetsu Abel, Mokomoko and Daisy Hand-painted cell sheet used in the production of the anime Dragon Quest: Abel Yuusha Densetsu, based on Enix and Akira Toriyama (鳥山 明) (designs). Executed in ink and gouache. Produced by Toei Animation 1989–1991, Japan H23 L26 cm Abel is the protagonist and guardian of the blue orb. Mokomoko is the team’s non-human companion — a furry creature whose design is directly reminiscent of certain characters from Toriyama’s Dragon Ball bestiary. Daisy is the group’s treasure hunter — the series’ ‘Action Girl’, a leading fighter whose popularity with viewers often surpassed that of Tiara, the nominal heroine. Her forthright nature and martial prowess make her an unusually strong figure for a 1989 animated series aimed at a young audience. The presence of all three characters in the same shot says something essential about the group’s dynamics: Abel, Mokomoko and Daisy form the series’ action trio — those who run, fight and push forward — whilst Tiara and Yanack fulfil different roles. A cel showing all three of them in motion is precisely the sort of climactic shot or narrative transition that precedes or follows a fight scene. This cell is also one of the few animation production documents from the first adaptation of the Dragon Quest franchise — a franchise whose game sales now exceed 85 million copies worldwide. The 1989 animated series was never broadcast in France and remains little known outside Japan and Korea — which makes its production materials all the more rare on the Western market. Three characters in motion on a single cell with designs by Toriyama: an exceptional piece from this little-known production.
