Description
Amon Saga (アモン・サーガ) Valhiss Graphite and coloured pencil artwork created for the production of the OAV *Amon Saga*, based on the work of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (安彦 良和). Produced by A.P.P.P. 1986, Japan H23 L27 cm Amon Saga is a 75-minute OAV produced in 1986, based on a manga by Baku Yumemakura with character designs by Yoshitaka Amano — the artist who would go on to become world-famous for his illustrations for Final Fantasy. The setting is a barbaric medieval fantasy world where Valhiss, the eponymous antagonist of the empire, reigns from a fortress perched on the back of a giant, moving tortoise. Valhiss always wears armour and a mask — his face is never revealed — a design reminiscent of the great masked villains of American comics, meaning the animators never had to depict him speaking. This dôga depicts the main villain of a rare production, bearing the hallmark of one of the greatest character designers in the history of Japanese animation.
