Description
Black Clover (ブラッククローバー) Asta Pencil and coloured pencil artwork created for the production of the Black Clover anime, based on the manga by Yūki Tabata (田畠 裕基). Produced by Studio Pierrot 2017–2021, Japan H21 L29.5cm The costume first helps to date the piece chronologically: Asta is wearing the short hooded cape characteristic of his outfit in the Kingdom of Spades arc — a costume adopted for missions outside the Kingdom of Clover, which replaces the Black Bulls’ tunic from the early seasons. This detail places the dôga within the 2020–2021 period of Studio Pierrot’s production, corresponding to the series’ most graphically ambitious episodes. The absence of a sword is the second distinctive feature. Asta without his anti-magic blades is not in active combat — he is in the moment just before or just after, in a state of pure tension. This unarmed pose is more difficult to animate than combat: it requires the entire dramatic weight to be carried by the body, the posture and the facial expression. The tilted framing, with the character positioned in the bottom right-hand corner of the shot, is the most unusually composed of all the Asta dôgas in this batch. In Studio Pierrot’s standard production, shots of isolated characters are centred — this deliberate off-centre placement signals a key animator who has made a strong expressive choice. The character positioned in the corner of the frame beneath a descending diagonal visually conveys the pressure and weight of the situation—something that is crushing or constricting—whilst the piercing gaze directed upwards towards the off-screen space expresses resistance to this pressure. A piercing gaze, a determined demeanour, unarmed, an unbalanced frame: this is the visual portrait of a character who has just realised something important and has decided to face the consequences. In the Kingdom of Spades arc, this type of moment corresponds to the scenes where Asta faces the Devils — entities whose power surpasses all known magic, and against whom Asta’s lack of magic ceases to be a handicap and becomes his only possible advantage.
