Black Clover (ブラッククローバー) Asta Pencil and coloured pencil artwork created for the production of the Black Clover anime, based on the manga by Yūki Tabata (田畠 裕基). Produced by Studio Pierrot 2017–2021, Japan H21 L29.5cm The costume first helps to date the piece chronologically: Asta is wearing the short hooded cape characteristic of his outfit in the Kingdom of Spades arc — a costume adopted for missions outside the Kingdom of Clover, which replaces the Black Bulls’ tunic from the early seasons. This detail places the dôga within the 2020–2021 period of Studio Pierrot’s production, corresponding to the series’ most graphically ambitious episodes. The absence of a sword is the second distinctive feature. Asta without his anti-magic blades is not in active combat — he is in the moment just before or just after, in a state of pure tension. This unarmed pose is more difficult to animate than combat: it requires the entire dramatic weight to be carried by the body, the posture and the facial expression. The tilted framing, with the character positioned in the bottom right-hand corner of the shot, is the most unusually composed of all the Asta dôgas in this batch.
