Kingdom (キングダム) Diao He Liao Graphite and coloured pencil artwork created for the production of the anime Kingdom, based on the manga by Yasuhisa Hara (原 泰久). Produced by Pierrot and Studio Signpost 2012–present, Japan H21 L29.5 cm Diao He Liao is a strategist — a character whose tactical intelligence is his primary weapon. In Kingdom, strategists have a special status: they do not fight directly but analyse the terrain and direct the movements of the armies from the rear. Depicting them visually presents animators with a different challenge to that of combatants: how do you visualise thought? The key frames of strategists show characters observing, calculating and in poses of concentration, which require a different range of expression.
