Description
King Arthur (The Tale of the Knights of the Round Table: Burn, Arthur!, Entaku no Kishi Monogatari Moero Āsā) Arthur Pendragon Hand-painted celluloid sheet, produced for the anime Produced by Toei Animation 1979, Japan H26 L23 cm Toei Animation’s King Arthur (1979) is one of the earliest adaptations of Arthurian legend into Japanese animation. Researchers De Vasselot specifically cite this type of production as the foundation of Japan’s fascination with European chivalry. This cell of Arthur Pendragon himself — the sword-wielding king, the sovereign of the Round Table — is a historical artefact in two respects: it bears witness to Japanese animation production in the late 1970s, and it depicts the legendary figure who has most influenced the image of the armoured warrior in Otaku culture. Excalibur, the Round Table, Camelot: all these elements, which Japanese fantasy has made its own, were introduced into animation by productions such as this one.
