Description
Rody the Little Cid (The Adventures of Little El Cid, Ritoru eru Shido no bōken, - Ruy, el pequeño Cid) Hand-painted celluloid sheet using gouache, produced for the animated film, based on the play *The Childhood of El Cid* (1618) by the Spanish playwright Guillén de Castro Produced by BRB Internacional and Nippon Animation studios 1980, Japan and Spain H23 L26 cm Rody the Little Cid is an adaptation of Guillén de Castro’s *Mocedades del Cid* (1618) — a 17th-century Spanish text about the youth of El Cid, himself the hero of the Spanish *Song of Roland*. A Japanese-Spanish co-production between Nippon Animation and BRB Internacional, it forms part of the wave of European adaptations that established Western chivalry in the Japanese television imagination of the 1980s. Researchers De Vasselot explicitly cite this series as one of those that ‘helped foster a love of the European Middle Ages among the Japanese public’. This gouache-painted celluloid, the result of a cross-continental co-production based on a 17th-century text, is a document at the crossroads of three cultures. A rare item from a series that has never been re-released.
