Description
Princess Knight - Ribon no Kishi (リボンの騎士) Princess Sapphire Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime Princess Knight, based on the work of Osamu Tezuka (手塚 治虫). Executed in ink and gouache. Produced by Mushi Production 1967–1968, Japan H23.6 L31 cm Osamu Tezuka’s Princess Knight is recognised by specialist researchers as the first anime set in a distinctly European fantasy world — and one of the first manga works to feature a heroine in armour. Princess Sapphire, born with both a boy’s heart and a girl’s heart, must fight in secret to defend her throne in a kingdom set against a backdrop inspired by medieval Europe. This 1967–1968 series is a seminal work in several respects: it is among the first of Osamu Tezuka’s manga to have been adapted into an anime, and it pioneered the European fantasy genre in Japanese animation, which would go on to influence production throughout the following decades. This cell is therefore an archival document of Japanese animation in its broadest historical context.
