Description
The Rose of Versailles – Lady Oscar (ベルサイユのばら) Oscar François de Jarjayes (Lady Oscar) Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime *The Rose of Versailles*, based on the work of Riyoko Ikeda (池田 理代子). Executed in ink and gouache. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS Entertainment) 1979–1980, Japan H26 L23 cm *The Rose of Versailles* is one of the most significant works of 20th-century Japanese animation — an adaptation of Riyoko Ikeda’s manga about Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man in the France of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. Its broadcast in France in the 1980s sparked a lasting cultural phenomenon. Oscar, clad in royal guard armour — an officer in Marie-Antoinette’s bodyguard — is one of animation’s great female knight figures, very much in the tradition of the ‘woman in armour’ pioneered by *Princess Knight* (lot 91). This cell from the 1979–1980 TMS production is a document of the series in its original version, prior to subsequent re-edits and re-releases.
