Description
Dororo (どろろ) Hyakkimaru Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime Dororo, based on the work of Osamu Tezuka (手塚 治虫). Executed in ink and gouache on an original gouache background. Produced by Mushi Production 1969, Japan H26, L30.5 cm Hyakkimaru alone — in what appears to be a fighting stance, his prosthetic limbs revealing the concealed blades. This cell depicts one of the most conceptually original characters in the entire history of Japanese animation: a warrior who lacks a complete body, with each victory restoring a fragment of it to him. The original gouache background sets the scene in a specific environment — indoors, outdoors, night or day — which the painted backdrop directly illustrates. Produced by Mushi Production, the studio founded by Osamu Tezuka.
