Description
Sakura Wars (サクラ大戦) Sakura Shinguji Hand-painted celluloid sheet, created for the anime based on the SEGA and RED Company game. Executed in ink and gouache on an original gouache background. Produced by Studio Satelight and Production I.G 2000, Japan H26 L23 cm Sakura Wars is a hybrid franchise combining video games, manga and animation, launched by Sega in 1996 — one of the most accomplished examples of what the literature on samurai in popular culture refers to as the cross-genre nature of Japanese productions. Sakura Shinguji is the main protagonist: heir to a family of demon fighters, she pilots a steam-powered mecha called Koubu whilst performing in an imperial theatre troupe in Tokyo in the 1920s. This dual identity — stage actress and secret warrior — is the central driving force behind the franchise.
