Description
One Piece (ワンピース)
Shinobu and Nami
Two dôgas in graphite and coloured pencils used in the production of the One Piece anime, based on the work of Eiichirō Oda (尾田 栄一郎).
Produced by Toei Animation
1999–present, Japan
H26 L23 cm
A dôga and a layout depicting one of the samurai of Wano — an unnamed character from the Wano arc (2019–2023). The Wano arc is, in fact, the One Piece arc most deeply rooted in the Japanese samurai imagination: set in a country inspired by isolationist feudal Japan, it draws directly on the conventions of jidaigeki (samurai films) and on the martial arts tradition that scholarship on Japanese popular culture identifies as the foundation of action animation. The inclusion of a layout (a production stage preceding the finalised dôga) alongside the dôga enriches the collection from a documentary perspective: two different stages of the same production process.
