B’t X is a manga by Masami Kurumada — the same author as Saint Seiya (lots 1–50). Published between 1994 and 1999, and adapted into an anime by TMS in 1996, the series follows Teppei as he seeks to save his brother in an empire ruled by machines known as B’ts — living armour units bound to their pilots by a blood contract. The link between B’t X and Saint Seiya is direct: in it, Kurumada reinvents the concept of armour as a living partner rather than mere equipment. This film by the same creator as the series at the heart of this programme creates an unexpected documentary-style resonance — the same creative vision behind two different conceptions of armour as a symbol of identity.
