Description
Tetsujin 28-gō (鉄人28号) Black Ox Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime based on Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s (横山光輝) work. Executed in ink and gouache. Produced by Matsuzaki Productions 1960, Japan H25 L28 cm This lot is the oldest item in the entire auction — and one of the oldest Japanese animation celluloids available on the collectors’ market. 1960: this was the live-action television series with special effects produced by Matsuzaki Productions — the first adaptation of the franchise, preceding the 1963 anime. The Black Ox is Tetsujin 28’s robotic adversary — a black robot controlled by the forces of evil, the hero’s antagonistic counterpart. This 65-year-old animation cell belongs to a period of Japanese animation that predates the visual conventions which would later define the TV series of the 1960s and 1970s. An absolutely rare item on the market: production materials from Japanese series of the 1960s are among the hardest to find in collections worldwide.
