This cell is one of the most valuable pieces in the Collection: it depicts three characters together against an original matching gouache background — a hand-painted setting that corresponds exactly to the shot. Arale Norimaki, the robot girl created by Professor Senbei in Penguin Village, is the first major heroine of Akira Toriyama’s career — before *Dragon Ball*, before Son Goku, it was Arale who launched her creator into the stratosphere of Japanese manga. Dr Slump won the Shōgakukan Prize as early as 1981 and achieved record viewing figures on Fuji TV. The Gatchans — winged cherubs with green hair, hatched from an egg brought back from prehistoric times and capable of devouring any material except rubber — are the series’ most popular supporting characters, accompanying Arale in almost all her adventures.
This set is a three-part collection from Toriyama’s most creatively prolific period — before Dragon Ball, in the comic purity of his first major success — featuring a matching gouache background that fully recreates a scene from the series. In France, only 55 of the 243 episodes have been dubbed, making the original production all the more rare for Western audiences.
