Dr Slump (Dr. スランプ アラレちゃん) Arale Norimaki Pencil and coloured pencil artwork created for the anime adaptation based on Akira Toriyama (鳥山 明) Produced by Toei Animation 1981–1986, Japan H24 L27 cm Arale is a robot who looks like a thirteen-year-old girl, endowed with superhuman strength which she is unaware is out of the ordinary — the main source of humour in the series. Her creator, Senbei, has to buy her new glasses because her eyesight is failing, and forbid her from running as she would destroy everything in her path. This line art directly reflects Toriyama’s graphic style as seen in the Toei anime adaptation — the large round glasses, the short fringe, and the innocent expression of a character whose colossal power is never apparent in her physique.
