Dragon Ball Z (ドラゴンボールZ) Great Saiyaman Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the Dragon Ball Z anime, based on the work of Akira Toriyama (鳥山 明). Executed in ink and gouache on an original gouache background. Produced by Toei Animation 1989–1996, Japan H26 L23 cm Great Saiyaman is Son Gohan’s heroic alter ego when he starts secondary school — a costume with a visor and cape designed with Bulma’s help to conceal his identity as a Super Saiyan. This story arc has divided the fandom for thirty years: set seven years after the victory over Cell, it casts Gohan — the character whose progression towards becoming the series’ ‘true hero’ seemed inevitable — in the role of a comical neighbourhood superhero. For its defenders, this is precisely what makes it so interesting: it is the only time in *Dragon Ball Z* that a main character is allowed to live without an imminent cosmic threat.
