Great Saiyaman is Son Gohan’s heroic alter ego when he starts secondary school — a costume with a visor and cape designed with Bulma’s help to conceal his identity as a Super Saiyan. This story arc has divided the fandom for thirty years: set seven years after the victory over Cell, it casts Gohan — the character whose progression towards becoming the series’ ‘true hero’ seemed inevitable — in the role of a comical neighbourhood superhero. For its defenders, this is precisely what makes it so interesting: it is the only time in *Dragon Ball Z* that a main character is allowed to live without an imminent cosmic threat. This cell on an original gouache background — a hand-painted background likely depicting a scene from Satan City — is a rare artefact.
