Dragon Ball Z (ドラゴンボールZ (Z)) Trunks Pencil and coloured pencil artwork created for the anime series based on the work of Akira Toriyama (鳥山 明) Produced by Toei Animation 1989–1996, Japan H25.5 L26 cm Trunks as a child — a character from the Buu arc (episodes 200–291), the final and longest arc of Dragon Ball Z, to be clearly distinguished from the teenage Trunks from the future, who appears in the Android and Cell arcs: the same character, but in two radically different time periods with two radically different physical appearances. Child Trunks is the son of Vegeta and Bulma, raised in the comfort of the present — knowing nothing of the destroyed timeline from which his future counterpart hails. His ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, acquired effortlessly during a sheltered childhood, stands in stark contrast to the fierce struggle for survival that enabled Future Trunks to achieve the same transformation. This is one of the most subtle comments Dragon Ball Z makes on the relationship between destiny and living conditions: same DNA, same potential, two opposing paths. In the Buu arc, Child Trunks and Goten form the series’ funniest and most powerful duo — their Gotenks fusion technique, intended as the ultimate weapon against Buu, also serves as a pretext for sequences of absurd humour that deliberately contrast with the gravity of the threat. Artwork and stills of Child Trunks are less common in collections than those of the teenage Trunks from the future — the child version being confined to the later arcs of the series, produced during the final years of Toei’s TV production.
