Description
Dragon Ball GT (ドラゴンボールGT) Trunks Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the Dragon Ball Z anime, based on the work of Akira Toriyama (鳥山 明). Executed in ink and gouache on an original gouache background. Produced by Toei Animation 1989–1996, Japan H24.3 L27.4 cm In the centre of the frame is the teenage Trunks — the son of Vegeta and Bulma in the present-day timeline, shown here aged around eighteen in the GT continuity. On his shoulder is Gill — the small spherical robot created by Dr Brief, a companion exclusive to the GT space arc, whose presence is the most precise indicator of this piece’s origin. Gill exists only in *Dragon Ball GT*: seeing this robot in a cel is enough to immediately identify the series and the period. To the right of the frame is Goten’s body — also a teenager in *GT* — whose head extends beyond the image, suggesting a wide composition that goes beyond the limits of the cel’s format. This cropped framing is a directorial choice: rather than a wide shot showing all three characters in full, the animator opted for a close-up centred on Trunks and Gill, leaving Goten partially visible. This type of composition—where a character deliberately steps out of the frame—is used for group scenes in confined spaces, such as the interior of the spaceship in which Trunks, the rejuvenated Goku and Pan set off in search of the Black Crystal Balls. Three characters, a robot exclusive to the series, an original painted background and a deliberately dynamic framing composition. Note: Dragon Ball GT is the only series in the franchise produced without Akira Toriyama as the original author — which makes its original production materials distinct from, and complementary to, those of Dragon Ball Z in a collection.
