Albator, the Space Pirate – Captain Harlock (宇宙海賊キャプテンハーロック) Albator (Captain Harlock) Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime Albator, the Space Pirate, based on the work of Leiji Matsumoto (松本 零士). Executed in ink and gouache. Produced by Toei Animation 1978–1979, Japan 26.5 × 35 cm Albator — Captain Harlock in the Japanese version — is the most legendary space pirate in Japanese animation. A solitary captain with a scar on his face, a skull symbol on his flag, and faithful to a personal code of honour that transcends all official law: Albator is the embodiment of the noble outlaw, one who refuses to submit to an order he deems corrupt. Its broadcast in France in the 1980s created a generation of fans whose devotion has never wavered.
