Description
Albator, the Space Pirate – Captain Harlock (宇宙海賊キャプテンハーロック) The Arcadia piloted by Albator’s father Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime Captain Harlock, the Space Pirate, based on the work of Leiji Matsumoto (松本零士) – Albator 84: The Atlantis of My Youth (わが青春のアルカディア —). Executed in ink and gouache. Produced by Toei Animation 1982, Japan H25.4 L30.4 cm This cell is distinct from other Albator lots: it depicts not Albator himself but the Arcadia — his father’s spaceship — from the production of the film *Albator 84: The Atlantis of My Youth* (1982). This film is Albator’s origin story — it recounts how the young Harlock became the solitary pirate featured in the TV series. In the film, the Arcadia is piloted by his father before being passed on to his son. This spaceship cel is not a character shot but a mechanical shot — a different type of document, in which animators must make the mass, velocity and proportions of a hand-painted spaceship on transparent film appear credible.
