Lupin III (ルパン三世) Arsène Lupin III Pencil and coloured pencil artwork created for the production of the Lupin III anime, based on Monkey Punch (モンキー・パンチ). Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS Entertainment) 1971–1972, Japan H24.3 L27 cm Lot 177 captures the moment of surprise — mouth wide open, uncontrolled expression, the criminal mastermind taken completely by surprise. This is Lupin’s fundamental paradox: the man capable of outwitting any security system in the world, rendered instantly foolish by a woman. The wide-open mouth is one of the most difficult expressions to animate in the franchise — Monkey Punch had developed an extreme facial distortion for his character in moments of surprise, which the TMS animators had to reproduce without descending into crude caricature. This pencil sketch shows the artist striking precisely that balance.
