Description
Candy Candy (キャンディ・キャンディ) Candy Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime *Candy Candy*, based on the work of Kyoko Mizuki (水木 杏子) and Yumiko Igarashi (いがらし ゆみこ). Executed in ink and gouache. Accompanied by its certificate of authenticity. Produced by Toei Animation and Nippon Animation 1976–1979, Japan H24 L36 cm The composition is unambiguous: Candy sprawled on a bed, wearing a green dress, with two pink bows in her hair — her childhood outfit, the one from her early years before the story arcs depicting her coming of age — her mouth open, her eyes closed, tears streaming down both sides of her face along her cheeks. The tears flowing simultaneously down both sides of her face are the graphic signature of a character lying on her back in tears — her body surrendered to grief, no longer having the strength to hold herself up. *Candy Candy* is one of the shōjo series of the 1970s that has most consistently depicted grief and loss as central narrative drivers. Candy is shown weeping on a bed at several pivotal moments in the series — Anthony’s death, the humiliations inflicted by the Leagans, and the separation from her loved ones. The green dress with pink bows places this scene during the character’s childhood or early adolescence — the most painful arcs of the series, before Candy develops the resilience that characterises her maturity. Visually, the animators at Toei / Nippon Animation reserved this type of shot — a close-up or extreme close-up of a weeping face lying down — for moments of absolute narrative rupture, those whose depth the viewer must never doubt. A mouth open but silent, eyes closed yet unseeing, tears streaming down unchecked: three details that reveal a body that has lost all self-control. Candy at the very depths of her pain, dressed as the child she still was when the world first began to hurt her.
