Lamu is adapted from the manga by Rumiko Takahashi — an author who would also become known for Maison Ikkoku and Ranma ½ (lot 191). Lum Invader, the green-haired alien with demon horns wearing a tiger-print bikini, is one of the most iconic figures in 1980s Japanese animation — an embodiment of the ‘waifu’ concept before the term even existed, a character whose popularity defined an entire aesthetic within otaku culture. Her relationship with Ataru Moroboshi — the unluckiest boy in the world, whom she decides to love — is one of the most inventive romantic comedies in animation from that period. This cell of Lum is a production artefact from Studio Pierrot’s series — the studio that would later produce *Naruto* and *Bleach*.
