This lot is technically the most elaborate in the Selection: a double-layer celluloid (two layers of celluloid superimposed) on a matching original gouache background — three production documents combined into a single shot. According to Isao Takahata, director of *Kie the Little Pest*, this type of multi-layered shot was reserved for the most meticulously crafted compositions. Kié is a young girl from Osaka who runs her family’s restaurant with her alcoholic father and her fighting cat, Tony. The series, adapted from Haruki Etsumi’s manga, is one of those examples of provincial Japanese popular culture that animation has managed to portray with rare tenderness.
