Castle in the Sky (1986) is Studio Ghibli’s first film — directed by Hayao Miyazaki immediately after the studio was founded with Isao Takahata. This cell depicts three characters in a single shot: Muska, the antagonist; Pazu, the protagonist; and Sheeta, the heroine — the three figures around whom the entire plot of the film revolves.
Muska is one of Miyazaki’s great antagonists — a government agent obsessed with the power of Laputa, whose final line (“I am the king of the castle!” followed by his blinding) remains one of the most memorable moments in animated cinema. His presence in the same shot as Pazu and Sheeta signals a scene of confrontation — most likely in the citadel of Laputa itself, during the film’s climax.
Ghibli production documents from 1986 are an absolute rarity on the global market. At that time, the studio had only just been founded, the teams were small, and the volume of celluloid produced per film was incomparably lower than that of a TV series.
