Description
The Mysterious Cities of Gold (Esteban, Child of the Sun) Esteban, Tao and Zia Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime The Mysterious Cities of Gold, based on a creation by Jean Chalopin, Bernard Deyriès and Mitsuru Kaneko. Executed in ink and gouache. Produced by Studio Pierrot and DIC Audiovisuel 1982–1983, Japan / France H23 L27 cm This cell depicts the three protagonists together — Esteban, Tao and Zia — in a group composition that directly captures the spirit of the series: three children from three different cultures (Spanish, Inca and Maya) who unite their heritage to discover the Cities of Gold. The Mysterious Cities of Gold is a Franco-Japanese co-production between Studio Pierrot and DIC Audiovisuel — one of the most ambitious animation projects of its time, combining documentary rigour (an educational end-credits sequence on pre-Columbian civilisations) with pure adventure. Its popularity in France has remained undiminished since 1983 — the series spawned a sequel in 2012 and then another in 2017.
