The fishing rod is the first object associated with Gon Freecss in the series — a child from Whale Island, raised by his aunt Mito in a fishing community, he wields the rod before he learns to use Nen. In Hunter × Hunter, this childhood symbol has a dual significance: it reveals Gon’s origins — an isolated island, a simple life, a preserved innocence — and it foreshadows what he will become, for the fisherman’s patience, the precision of the cast and the ability to read the water are the very qualities the hunter will draw upon in his battles.
The posture — legs apart, both arms outstretched at a three-quarter angle — suggests either an active cast or maintaining tension on the line: even in the most peaceful activity in his repertoire, Gon is fully physically engaged. There are no half-measures with this character — he applies the same intensity to holding his fishing rod as he does to fighting Hisoka.
This is Gon as he was before he knew he was about to change — and as he remains deep down, even afterwards.
