Spinning tops are Killua Zoldick’s weapon of choice in the early arcs of Hunter × Hunter — seemingly innocuous objects transformed into projectiles of lethal precision by a thrower trained from childhood to kill. Viewing them as targets for Gon to dodge places this dôga within a training sequence or a confrontation between the two friends — Killua testing Gon’s reflexes, or Gon putting himself through an exercise in maximum sensory perception.
For that is precisely what the closed eyes in this composition convey. Gon does not dodge by seeing the spinning tops coming — he dodges by sensing them. In Hunter × Hunter, this ability to perceive the environment without sight is one of the earliest manifestations of Gon’s Nen potential — even before he has formally mastered this energy, his body reacts to what his eyes cannot see. Closed eyes do not signify blindness: they signify a form of perception superior to ordinary sight.
His arms thrust backwards complete the picture: this is the posture of a forward dive to dodge — his body weight shifted forwards, his arms acting as a counterbalance to maintain equilibrium during the movement. It is an active dodge, not a defensive retreat.
